My Favorite 3 Youth Baseball Hitting Drills

One of the biggest challenges in youth baseball is helping hitters build a consistent, powerful swing, and over time I’ve found a few drills that consistently deliver results. My top three favorites are the High Tee Drill, the Step Back Drill, and 45s. These are simple, effective, and can be done almost anywhere with a tee and a net. What I love most about these drills is that they focus on the fundamentals: swing path, power production and body control. When young players master these areas, everything else starts to fall into place at the plate.

The High Tee Drill is one of the best ways to develop a strong, direct swing path. By setting the tee higher than normal, just below chest level, hitters are forced to stay on top of the ball and avoid dropping their hands. This builds a more efficient swing and helps eliminate uppercutting or looping.

The Step Back Drill is all about rhythm and timing. By stepping back before striding forward into the swing, players learn how to control their weight shift and generate more power from their lower half. It also helps hitters stay relaxed instead of rushing their swing.

Finally, 45s is a great drill for production of power and feeling the lower half. By placing the body at 45 degrees players can build power into the legs and release it upon swinging. It helps them feel a combination of contact and launch, which leads to more consistent power. This drill is a little more advanced but worth the time to get it right. When you combine these three drills into your routine, you’re building a complete hitter, one who has control, power, and confidence every time they step into the box.
